When I was young, my grandma often told me a story. I remembered my grandma told me a real story on a cold evening.
Not many years ago, an old farmer went to the city to sell carrots, turnips(萝卜), celery(芹菜) and other kinds of vegetables. But it was snowing that day so that there were few people on the road. When he sold out his vegetables, it was very dark. On his way home, He saw a woman lying in the snow. The old farmer put his basket on the ground and was going to help the woman to stand up. Just then he f ound it was a dead woman and there was much blood(血) on the ground. He was so frightened that he ran away quickly, without taking his basket away. The next day the old farmer was sent to the police station. After showing the basket, an officer(警官) asked the poor man,“Is it yours?”
“Yes,sir,” the poor farmer answered timidly(胆怯).
“When did you see the dead woman?”
“About nine o’clock yesterday evening.”
“Did you see who killed her?”
“No, I couldn’t see.”
The officer brought out a knife and asked, “Have you seen it yet?” “No, sir.” The officer became angry and ordered(命令) the policeman to beat him up and sent him to prison(监狱).
That afternoon the officer went on trying(审讯) pointing to the knife, the officer asked again, “Have you seen it yet?” “Yes, sir.”
“Well,” the officer became happy and asked, “But when and where?” “I saw it here this morning, sir.” The honest(诚实) old farmer answered.
