M: That sounds familiar.

Text 2

M: Have you found out which group you'll be working with this semester? I'm in C.Tom's in A.What about you?

W: Lucky you.I'm in Group B, and I can see already that trouble is on its way!

Text 3

M: I've telephoned to see if you'd like to go to the concert this afternoon.

W: I'd really like to, but I broke my glasses and I've got to get another pair before doing anything else.

Text 4

W: Would you mind if I visit your class tomorrow morning, Professor Jackson?

M: I have no objection to your visit, but the students will take their examination tomorrow morning.Perhaps you can come back the day after tomorrow.

W: No problem.

Text 5

W: Have you ever heard about the new Global Positioning System for locating things?

M: Yes, I have.I believe they call it GPS for short.

W: Do you know how it operates?

M: Yes.It operates through the use of 24 satellites that are circling the earth.

Text 6

W: John.As you know, we're looking for someone working in our Communications Department. But why should we hire you?

M: Well, I have a degree in marketing. And I have some experience.Last year, I worked as an assistant marketing director at a company and had a training course in media relations.

W: OK.So tell me what your biggest weakness as a worker is?

M: Um, I tend to be a bit of workaholic. When I was working, I had to work 12 0r 15 hours a day in the beginning, and I have to say that I loved it.

W: Well, thank you for coming today. We’ll be in touch.

Text 7

W: Hi.Are you a neighbor around here?

M: Yes.This is the street where my mother gave birth to me.I’ve lived here for three quarters of a century except the three years spent fighting in Europe.

W: So you know every corner of the street, don't you?

M: Exactly.Are you a newcomer here?

W: No, not really. But it's true that I am a stranger here.I'm looking for my client's office. It must be somewhere in this neighborhood. It's 145 Renew Street.

M: It must be the new office complex.Look, you go down the street for three blocks and you will catch the smell of fresh bread. You’ll find Joe's Bakery and Deli on your right. The building is right beside Joe's.

W: Oh.Thank you very much.

Text 8

W: I like to go to fashion shows. They give you some ideas about what kinds of clothes are

coming into fashion and which ones are going out.

M: It's nice to see those pretty models walking down the runway in beautiful clothing. But to be frank, I don't think those clothes are practical for everyday wear.

W: I think we're beginning to see some practical Italian ready-to-wear collections being shown these days. And they reach the American stores just a few weeks after the major fashion shows.

M: This should be good news for America's career women. They are this country's most eager

consumers of the Italian styles. It's time for the Italian designers to figure out that only when

they make fashions more practical, they will have a bigger market here.

Text 9

W: Hmm...Here’s people moving house.I think that's pretty stressful,

M: Well.I think it's not so bad.But I do think that going to the dentist is stressful.

W: Oh, so do I! It's stressful because you have no control.

M: That's right.Look at this one. This poor boy sitting in an exam.I think exams are the most stressful.Sometimes you just can't think of anything to write.

W: Yes, I agree with you there. What about these people here?

M: Mmm...I'm not sure. They seem to be in a hurry, don't they? I think being late is stressful.

W: That's true.It can be terrible, especially when you're late for something important.

M: Like an interview.Look at this picture here; here's someone in an interview.Do you think interviews are stressful?

W: No, I think they're quite exciting, a challenge.

M: Oh, I hate interviews.

Text 10

When a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its white tail moves up and down as it runs. The other see this white tail moving up and down, and they run, too.The rabbit has told them about the coming danger without making any sounds. This has given them a signal.

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home.

It tells other bees where the food is by a little dance instead of speaking to them. The dance is its language.

Some animals say things by making sounds.A dog barks, for instance, when a stranger comes near. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way.We make sounds like "Oh" or "Ah" when we are frightened or pleased.

But we have something that no animals have — a large number of words with meanings of things, actions, feelings and ideas. We are able to give each other information, telling others what is in our mind and how we feel.By writing words down, we can remember for a long time the things that have happened, or send messages to people far away.
