About one year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never heard any noise from the children. Instead, I often heard the parents yelling 26 at the kids, not in a nice tone, but in a 27 one.
We often 28 in the hallway. I always greeted them, but the only 29 I eve r got was a “hello” from the eight-year-old girl. I usually 30 to see my doctor and one day when I returned they were just 31 their apartment and the little girl was 32 the outside door open for the others. I 33 in the car doing 34 things because I wasn’t eager to be snubbed(冷落)again. Finally, I got out of my car and walked towards the door. The parents were telling their daughter to hurry and get into the car, 35 the little girl was holding the door, 36 me! I hurried although I was still in pain from my injury.
I forgot to tell her how 37 I was for her kindness. I wrote a note saying how much her act of kindness had 38 an old man’s heart.
The next day there was a 39 on my door and it was the little girl and her father. She was quite 40 of her behavior and thanked me. Then I noticed her mother standing there, too. Her parents 41 me. From then on when we met in the hallwa y we always greeted each other, in a friendly 42 .
Last night there was a heavy snow. I looked out at my car and 43 how I was going to keep my doctor’s 44 because I could not walk for a short time. This morning when I opened the front door, all the snow was removed.

Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket —— anything with a round ball, I was useless.” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year, he met John Ridgway and he was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided that this would be his future.
In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his fist long-distance expedition towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite(冻疮), ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled(雪橇)up and over rocky ice. Next October, Saunders, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctic to the South Pole and back, a 2900-kilometer journey that has never been completed on skis.
