Step I Lead-in
Put up the coloured map of the world in the last period on the Bb. Let Ss work in pairs to talk about it.
T: Can you say something about China according to we learned yesterday.
Suggested answers:
S: This is China, our country. We come from China. We live in China. It’s in the east. It’s red on the map. It looks like a cock. It has two eggs. One is Hainan, the other is Taiwan.
T: Well done! From the map, what country is east of China? (Write it on the Bb and explain it to the class.)
Ss: Canada and the U.S.
T: Right. Canada and the U.S. are east of China. (Have Ss repeat it a few times.)
Let Ss make up sentences with Japan (日本) and Korea(韩国).
Japan is east of China.
Korea is east of China.
Step II Song
T: Next let’s listen to a song: Singing our country. If possible, sing with the tape.
Play the audiotape.
T: Do you know why do we listen to this song? That’s right. Today we’ll talk about our country,China.
Step III Discussion
Show a map of China.
T: This is a map of China. What city is it? (Point to the star on the map.)
Ss: Beijing.
T: Yes, it’s Beijing, our capital. What’s the capital (city) of China? (Write it on the Bb and have Ss read it.) Please answer my question with a full sentence.
Ss: Beijing is the capital (city) of China.
T: Good! Now let’s discuss in groups: What do you know about Beijing?
Maybe Ss can’t say anything in English. Tell them Chinese is OK.
Step IV Presentation
After listening to the results of the discussion, show some pictures on the screen.
T: They are some of what you talked of. We are familiar with them.
Picture 1 What is it in English? Tian’anmen Square
(Show it on the screen and have Ss read it.)
Picture 2 The Palace Museum
Picture 3 The Great Wall
Picture 4 The Summer Palace
T: (Show an object.) Now look at the flag. Our country’s flag. What colour is it?
Ss: It’s red.
T: How many stars are there on the flag?
Ss: It has five yellow stars.
T: One is big, the other four are small. By the way, what do we speak in China?
Ss: … (Maybe some Ss can say the word. Some can’t. Help them to answer: We speak Chinese.)
Step V Pairwork
Ss practise in pairs about the pictures and the flag using the target language. Their conversations should include the following questions:
1. What’s it in English?
2. What do you speak in China?
3. What’s the capital city of China?
4. Is Beijing the capital city of China?
5. Something about the flag.
Step VI Listening
Play the tape for the students to listen to Part 1 on Page 74. Think about the following Qs before listening to the tape:
1. Where is Li Ming from?
2. What does he speak?
3. What is the capital city of China?
4. What country is east of China?
Let Ss listen to it twice to try to catch the main sentences in the dialogue. Check the answers.
Suggested answers:
1. He is from China.
2. He speaks Chinese.
3. It’s Beijing.
4. The U.S. is east of China.
