southeast是south和east组成的合成词,意思是“东南”。注意是south在前,east在后。类似的还有southwest,northeast,northwest.

Make a survey and complete the survey chart. Divide the class into groups of ten Ss. Let them fill in the chart by asking several Ss for each question “What country would you like to visit?” and “Why?”

At last, they report the result of the survey: Find out which country most of them would like to visit? For example: Many students would like visit the U.K. most (30%).

S2: It’s in Guangdong. It’s southwest of Shanghai.

Step II Talk about the survey
Let Ss make up conversations orally, using the information in the survey above.
A sample conversation:
S1: What country would you like to visit, S2?
S2: I would like to visit Australia.
S1: Why?
S2: Because I like kangaroos and want to make friends with them.
S1: What country would S3 like to visit?
S2: He / She would like to visit the U.K.
S1: Why?
S2: Because He / She wants to go to study there one day.
Step III Game
This game works for as many as twenty to twenty-five Ss. Repeat the game so everyone has a turn. Prepare a set of vocabulary cards you want to review (The names, languages and capital cities of different countries, describing the direction of the country from China, the symbols of cities.). Give the cards to students. Do not let Ss stand beside each other. Spread them out in the classroom. When you say Go! , the Ss all begin saying the word on their vocabulary card over and over again.
They must move to find the other Ss in the classroom to form groups like this:
the U.S.—English—Washington D.C.—the White House—New York—the Statue of Liberty
Which group is formed first is the winner.
Step IV Competition
Have a competition. (Ex. I. A, on Page 79)
Divide the class into two groups (boys and girls). See which group can find out the most words in the shortest time.
Step V Grammar Focus
First complete Ex. II, on Page 79.
Then help students review the grammar: Special Qs.
1. In a special question: 疑问词+be动词/助动词+主语+其它成分 ?Generally, we use falling intonation in Special Qs (WH- questions), in declarative sentences and short answers. While we use rising intonation in Yes/No questions.
2. Special Qs can’t be answered with Yes / No.
3. We have learnt: what, where, when, why, how, how much, how many, how old, how tall, whose and so on. Show some special Qs we have learnt on the screen to help students review the grammar.
